The Church, The Garden Of The Lord
By the garden here spoken of we are to understand the Church of Christ, which is represented in the word of God by several different figures. It is spoken of under the figure of a wife: "Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish " (Eph. 5:25-27). Mark you, "it;" the little word "it" can never have an indefinite meaning; here it particularly refers to the church. The church is also spoken of under…

4 The Christian Armed With Christ
Among other characters which God's believing people bear, that of a soldier is certainly one of the most prominent. And the apostle, speaking of himself and fellow believers, says, "Though we walk in the flesh we do not war after the flesh: for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds, casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought unto the obedience of Christ," 2 Cor. 10:3, 5. So that though the Christian is one who knows what it is to "groan, being burdened;" yet there are precious seasons when he knows what it is to "take the whole armour of…

Yes, and this even after we have been instructed, time after time, to know that God's Word, despite…

A Calendar For The Latter Half Of The Year 1850
July witnesses the trees full of sap; and may it be the experience of the dear reader, to be full of the sap of divine life, strictly avoiding all nourishment but that which is gained from the fulness of Christ, for there is such a thing as the unprofitable sustenance of self-righteousness, that brings forth "uncircumcised fruit" (Leviticus 19:23). Unto Cain and to his offering the Lord had not respect, because it was the fruit of the ground. Everything at this season of the year seems full of life and activity, but whatever examples of industry and perseverance we may have, all such working cannot produce life, but only gains us the fruit of our labour; the vital principle within is the cause of life,…
