A Nail In A Sure Place

Our previous studies in Isaiah have helped us to understand how much awareness Old Testament believers had concerning the coming of the Messiah. We have seen how the place, circumstances and parentage of Christ’s extraordinary birth were known. We have learned that Isaiah knew about the redemption and deliverance of God’s chosen people. We have noted how detailed prophecies to comfort and encourage God’s remnant church were given and later fulfilled. An enduring message In all of Isaiah’s writings the person of the Lord Jesus can be discerned in typical ways in the historical and circumstantial events portrayed. As the prophet laid out God’s purpose and message for the people of his own age, and generations following, we detect spiritual significance in the things written.…

Vessels Of Wrath And Vessels Of Mercy

I would beg to acquaint the Christian Reader of the following pages, that I preached the Sermons of which they form the substance, at the particular request of some brethren in the Lord, who were desirous of hearing a scriptural exposition of these verses. I bless God that I have been enabled to study, preach, and send forth my discourses in a spirit of prayer and submission, as opposite to my natural disposition as light is to darkness. My reasons for printing are, a desire to he useful to the people of God, and to prevent perversion and misrepresentation; or, at all events, by printing as nearly as possible, the positions, assertions, and expressions, proved and made use of, to afford all an opportunity of…

    Full Assurance Of Faith

The genius of the Epistle to the Hebrews is the pre-eminence given to the Lord Jesus Christ, showing Him to be the fulfilment of the types and shadows of the Mosaic law with its sacrifices and rituals. The Levitical priesthood points to Christ’s office as our Great High Priest. The legal sacrifices prefigured the unique and perfect sacrifice Christ offered for us. Hebrews explains that the gospel does not modify the law of Moses. It supersedes and abolishes it. Grace pleases God We have seen how the person of Christ and all aspects of gospel revelation, from electing grace to final glory, please the Lord Jehovah. This is no surprise. The covenant of peace and the plan of redemption is designed according to the will…

    A Complete And Certain Salvation

“The Lord God will help Me, therefore shall I not be confounded; therefore have I set My face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.”—Isaiah 50:7 These surely, brethren, are not the words of the prophet Isaiah concerning himself; for, if we look at the context, we find the work of the Lord Jesus set before us in such words as these: “The Lord God hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back. I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.” I need scarcely tell you of whom the prophet spake in these words. We have in…
