The Life And Ministry Of Henry Pounds

I was born at Poplar, on the 5th of November, 1863, and was the child of gracious parents. When very young I had impressions that I was a sinner, and held vague ideas that unless my sins were forgiven, I should go to hell. When these convictions were upon me, I was very earnest informally saying my prayers. When about nine years of age I was tempted to make use of my parents' money, and continued to do so until I was found out. For a time such was the guilt upon my conscience, that I was ashamed to face my brothers and sisters and dreaded my parents. This natural repentance gradually wore off, but never wholly left me. I tried hard to keep from…

The Life And Ministry Of Henry Hall

“The memory of the just is blessed.”—Prov 10:7 It is with keen feelings of sorrow that we record the almost sudden death of our long known and very highly esteemed friend and brother in Christ, Mr. Henry Hall, pastor of Ebenezer chapel, Wirtemberg- street, Clapham. The loss of our brother to the Church of which he was so long pastor, and to the denomination at large, is great indeed, as he was ever ready to assist God's cause in any direction to the utmost of his ability. His warm and liberal heart, and the principles of faith which he tenaciously held and propagated for so many years, have endeared his memory to many genuine saints, who sorely grieve (although not without hope of his spirit…

The Life And Ministry Of Henry Boulton

My dear departed father, Henry Boulton, was born in Whiskin Street, Clerkenwell, August 27, 1843, of godly parents, whose desire was to train up their children in the fear of the Lord. The early impressions that he received under the teaching of his godly mother were often the cause of deep and solemn thoughts concerning the future. His parents were Strict Baptists, but more often they attended Woodbridge Street Chapel, then under the pastoral care of Mr. Luckin. When about six years of age, he was sent to the Sabbath School connected with Woodbridge Street, and continued there for many years; and occasionally he referred in the pulpit to the teaching that he received there; and would mention the hymns he was taught when a…

The Life And Ministry Of H. J. Wileman

On May 28th, 1860, much joy was expressed to a small circle of friends in the small country town of Oakham, because a seventh son was born of gracious, praying parents, who received their tender charge as a gift from God, to train in His fear. Judging from that early training, so distinct some of it even today, one can see plainly that an earthly portion was by no means the only thing thought of. This was verified in after years, for not only can the writer remember the prayers of his mother, which he listened to, as he crept to her bedroom door, but has also seen his father's face wet with tears, as his heart went up to God to ''bless the dear…

The Life And Ministry Of George Turner

“The memory of the just is blessed.”—Prov 10:7 These words express our heart's feeling as we attempt to give the readers of the Earthen Vessel & Gospel Herald some account of our dear brother Turner, concerning whom it may truly be said that he was ''one of the excellent of the earth." George Turner was born at Oxney Green, Writtle, near Chelmsford, Essex, on March 3rd, 1833. Often has he been heard to speak of the beneficial influence of a godly mother's prayers and teaching when he was very young. Her wont was to cause him to kneel by her side whilst she engaged in prayer asking the Lord to forgive his sins, keep him from temptation, bless, and save him; and many a time…

The Life And Ministry Of Ebenezer Beecher

My Dear Brother,—In response to your request for a sketch of my life, I may say, that although born of believing parents on November 9th, 1837, and trained by them according to their ideas of propriety, it became evident in my case that, "that which is born of the flesh is flesh," and although I was preserved from going to a great length in open profanity, I had no manifest spiritual life until I was over 21 years of age; still, there were three distinct events earlier than that, which I now know to be the work of the Holy Spirit. But in the summer of 1859, an answer given to a question propounded by me, was the means of opening my eyes, and sending…
