Psalm 27:4: “One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.”
Philip Doddridge (1702-1751) was an English Congregational minister, an academician and hymn writer. He was appointed pastor of a church in Northampton, where he remained for twenty years. At this place, he opened a large academy designed to train gospel preachers. The subjects taught, often by himself, were Hebrew and Greek, Theology, Watts' Logic, Philosophy and Mathematics. He earned the respect of many reputable Christians, among whom were Isaac Watts, James Hervey and John Warburton. He died of tuberculosis shortly after arriving in Lisbon, Portugal, the purpose of his trip to recover from the illness.
